Friday 26th September - Aberdeen to Stonehaven

In which, we clock up some miles

Whoa, now we’re motoring! Yesterday was a bit dull (sat in a car most of the day – not happy) until tea-time, then had a walk around Lerwick. I say ‘walk’ but it looks like I get carried around the place. This is presumably a consequence of being a celebrity wellie rather than a worker wellie.

Next, on to the big ship. It’s called the Hjaltland. I know I’m just a wellie but how are you meant to pronounce that, for goodness sake? Anyway, leaving aside the linguistic challenges, this ship is the business. Very smart. Very appropriate for a celebrity (that’s me, by the way – did I mention that?).

A peaceful evening while my colleague Isabel knocks back the G&Ts on her seemingly vast expense account, a good night’s sleep, then woken (far too early) by the sound of a million blooming seagulls in my next port of call, Aberdeen. Adieu to NorthLink Ferries and bundled into a bag. Humph.

Oh, here we go again, some other gadgie wanting to write his name on me. What is it with these yellow-wellied comrades? This is clearly what happens in these RNLI stations. They grab hold of you and inflict ink-fuelled indignity on helpless wellies.

Isabel is joined here by some other callow Shaw Marketing and Design fellow called Gordon, who is toting a flimsy yellow bag, into which I am thrust. Not all bad, though, because we hit the open road on bikes (well, I’m still in the bag, of course, but you get the picture). Dear me, they’re making a bit of a job of this. Wellies are not put off by hills but clearly these guys are. Never mind, it’s not a bad effort.

My world tour (for that is what I presume this is) is taking me, some time later, into Stonehaven. Lovely. More sea. Looks like the last sea to me. And cliffs. Still, as I’m a bit bike-sick, I’m very pleased to be here. All in all, a pretty fair day. Wonder what tomorrow will bring. Where next for a wandering wellie?
